INTERNATIONAL 2 STAGE DESIGN COMPETITION
the plan for loreto abbey dalkey sports hall tries to build dynamic relational spaces. the sports hall develops like binoculars to the dramatic views to Dalkey Island being an edge northwards to Loreto Avenue and the old pavilion building.
The aim is to create a contemporary core not only for the school but also for the community, a dual element of the historic convent building, modifying the enclosure into an open diaphragm, allowing the gaze to wander and reconstructing a spatial continuum between the surroundings and the school.
in the entrance area a deep cut thought as a signature of the school welcomes the visitors, spectators and citizens in the hall foyer, while the glass front on the parking defines the indoor storages. the spectators area develops upon this glazed frame, creating an higher space upon to watch the sports equipments and all the service spaces to the hall foyer, facing to the short side of indoor hall invite to pass through to school open spaces: running track, hockey pitch and outdoor basketball courts.
